Project Description: Design, staged development and operation (until 1999) of an opencast and underground coal mine with an ultimate capacity in excess of 2.5 million t/a. In the underground mine, coal is produced utilising the "Cut and flit" method of mining on development with subsequent extraction utilising mobile roof supports and a modified Wongawilli method. United Collliery had an output per man shift (OMS) of 65 tonnes, the highest in Australia for a continuous miner/shuttle car operation. The introduction of a mobile, continuous haulage system further increased mine productivity. United was the first underground mine in Australia to employ such a system.
Start Date: 1987
